This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to collaborate with two amazing artists – Kid Koala, and KK Barrett (That’s a lot of K’s). We relocated to Montreal back in 2014, and built a design studio from scratch – assembling a crack team of model makers, puppet designers, and scenic artists to create more than a dozen table-top sized touring sets.
This stage adaptation of Kid Koala’s graphic novel unfolds in front of a live audience – the performance is cinematically lit, filmed, and projected on a large screen. Kid Koala, accompanied by the Afiara String Quartet, performs his original score on piano and turntable as a team of puppeteers and stage hands create the miniature world of Nufonia in real-time.
Since premiering at Toronto’s Luminato Festival in 2015, it has toured to London, New York, Hamburg, Santiago, Montreal, Shanghai, Abu Dhabi, and embarked on a coast to coast USA Tour.
“All directors have an eye on the proceedings but hope the designer surprises and surpasses their own ideas. We had Ben Gerlis (of Stripeland) design the sets and he did an amazing job with tireless detail…It was fun problem-solving with him, we always agreed and he always surprised.” – KK Barrett (Oscar nominated Production Designer of Her, Where The Wild Things Are, Lost in Translation and Being John Malkovitch)
